Upstate-Kentucky Basketball to be Televised

11- 06- 2006

Spartanburg, S.C. - When the USC Upstate men’s basketball team opens the 2006-07 season Monday night in an exhibition game at the University of Kentucky, the Spartans will be on regional center stage on Fox Sports South.

The game, which will begin at 7:00 p.m., can be seen locally on Charter Cable Channel 27, DIRECTV Channel 630, and Dish Network Channel 420.  The game can be seen nationally on DIRECTV and Dish Network.  Users outside of the Upstate region of South Carolina should check their local listings for the appropriate DIRECTV and Dish Network channels.

The game against No. 22 Kentucky (ESPN/USA Today Preseason Poll) is the first contest against outside competition for USC Upstate this season.  It also marks the first time in two years that the Spartans will face a Division I opponent.  In 2004-05, USC Upstate opened the season with exhibition games at No. 2 Wake Forest and South Carolina before playing Appalachian State during the regular season.

USC Upstate is coming off two straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament and two Peach Belt Conference championships.  The Spartans won the regular season conference championship in 2004-05 and claimed the school’s first ever Peach Belt Tournament title last year.  USC Upstate won 24 games in 2004-05 and 20 games a year ago for Head Coach Eddie Payne.

USC Upstate is in its final season as a member of NCAA Division II and the Peach Belt Conference.  The University will move its athletics program to NCAA Division I status and the Atlantic Sun Conference beginning in 2007-08 and is serving its Division I exploratory year this season.
