Faculty Research Support Opportunities

Scholarly Start-Up Package: Provide initial momentum to a faculty member’s research, scholarly, or creative productivity with a $5,000 Startup Package. Only tenure-track hires in their first and second years are eligible to apply. Click here to view the complete program details. Apply Now!

Scholarly Course Reallocation Program: Increase a faculty member’s research, scholarly, or creative productivity by reducing their course load for a semester by one course. This program will award up to $2,500 to the faculty member’s department to hire an adjunct instructor who will teach the course that the faculty member would have been teaching. All full-time USC Upstate faculty members are eligible to apply for this program. Teaching and Productivity Scholarship (TAPS) Fund: The purpose of the USC Upstate Teaching and Productive Scholarship (TAPS) Fund is to promote good scholarship, including original research projects, programs that support curriculum development, and travel for presentation of scholarship. Funded projects will support the scholarship process with the goal of formal presentation and/or publication, improve pedagogy and curriculum development to contribute to the USC Upstate mission, and/or enable major service projects which require application of scholarly and/or professional knowledge.TAPS awards are coordinated by the Teaching and Excellence Committee (TEC). Promising Investigator Research Award (PIRA) Fund: Provided by the Office of Research and Graduate Education (USC Columbia) to encourage faculty to develop individual research projects leading to the pursuit of external funding and or the promotion of scholarly activities.Visit USC Columbia's website for this program.

  • Track I funds will be considered "seed" monies and will be awarded to faculty with the stated objective of enhancing the competitiveness of a subsequent submission of a new or renewal proposal for external funding. Priority will be given to junior researchers that have received optimistic reviewers’ comments from a sponsor. 
  • Track II funds support the general development, expansion or enhancement of faculty research and creative activity. These funds are focused on research contributions that increase academic, intellectual and scholarly activity.
  • Track III funds support the creative and performing arts. Support may include costs associated with creating an exhibit, a performance, a musical work, etc.
