Safe-Zone

LGBTQ Safe Zone

About Safe Zone
The Safe Zone Program is a campus wide initiative with the intent to recognize members of the University community who support the LGBTQ population, understand LGBTQ issues and are aware of the LGBTQ resources both on and off campus. The Safe Zone training sessions are two hours in length, and affords the basic information needed to be an Ally to the LGBTQ student population at USC Upstate. Registration is required for only one of the two hour training sessions in order to receive certification. Campus wide trainings will be offered several times throughout the academic year, but specific training sessions can be scheduled using the Request a Workshop Form.

Safe Zone Certification

The certification for Safe Zone is valid for three years after completion of the workshop. Individuals who finish the training sessions will have the option of obtaining and displaying a Safe Zone decal or button in their residence hall, office space or other location to highlight their Safe Zone certification status. By deciding to display the Safe Zone decal, participants should feel comfortable with having conversations with LGBTQ students about issues they are facing and with offering assistance as needed. Persons who complete the training will also have the choice to be included in an online safe zone network.

Other Opportunities for Learning and Engagement

The Safe Zone initiative also has additional learning opportunities for USC Upstate students. Following the first training session, the Safe Zone Program will provide multiple opportunities for allies to better support the LGBTQ student population through identity development, networking and educational workshops.

Trans Advocacy Workshop
The Trans Advocacy Workshop is designed to further examine issues of sexual identity and gender expression. This two-hour long workshop narrowly focuses on transgender identities, issues and experiences. All interested participants MUST complete the Safe Zone Ally training prior to attending the Trans Advocacy Workshop. For additional information, contact the Office of Student Life at 864-503-7454, or email multicultural@uscupstate.edu.
