The Sixth Annual SC Upstate Research Symposium
The Sixth Annual SC Upstate Research Symposium will be held on Friday March 26, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Milliken & Company in Spartanburg. Lunch, printed symposium proceedings, and other materials will be provided. This FREE Symposium series provides a forum for faculty, students, and community representatives throughout the Upstate to interact with each other, to share information and expertise, and to nurture future research collaborations.
The program will feature presentations, posters, and tutorials contributed by faculty and students from numerous disciplines at USC Upstate, Converse College, Wofford College, Presbyterian College, Limestone College, Sherman College, Winthrop University, Spartanburg Community College, Lander University, Spartanburg Methodist College, and Southern Wesleyan University. The Best Student Presentation, Poster, and Paper will be recognized with the student scholars receiving award certificates and prizes.
The event will be anchored by Keynote Addresses from prominent researchers and executives in the region. Student groups and staff from regional high schools and other community representatives will also attend the Symposium. The event is FREE thanks to the generosity of our sponsors. Scope and Purpose:
Provide a forum where both faculty and students from primarily undergraduate institutions throughout the Upstate of South Carolina can interact to discuss and share information regarding their research, scholarly, and/or creative endeavors. Goal: stimulate research, grant writing, and multi-disciplinary collaborations between Upstate universities and colleges.
Provide a forum where students can experience a professionally organized research symposium. Both student and faculty submissions require a coversheet and a two to three page short paper which must be specifically formatted and presented orally or by poster. Goal: expose students to a very important and sometimes overlooked aspect of research, dissemination.
Provide a forum where high school students throughout the Upstate can interact with college-level faculty and students, and learn about the types of research being pursued at the colleges and universities throughout the Upstate. Goal: encourage Upstate high school students to remain in the Upstate for their college education.
Provide a forum where business and community leaders throughout the Upstate can interact with faculty and students, and learn about the types of research being pursued at the colleges and universities throughout the Upstate. Goal: stimulate granting writing and other research-oriented partnerships between Upstate universities and community organizations and businesses.
Provide tutorial sessions that educate Upstate faculty, students, and community representatives on important aspects of research and scholarship. Example tutorials could include: grant writing; helpful technology used in research; and engaging students in research. Goal: increase the knowledge and expertise of Upstate faculty, students, and community representatives on the art of grant writing and other research-related activities.
