Scenarios for the future of the Upstate Region
Scenarios are a powerful way to understand options for the future, and the consequences of different courses of actions. Scenarios can be derived from studies (for example, what happens if current trends continue), from concepts (for example, what would it take to
eliminate congestion from our roads in 30 years, or what would it take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions), or from workshops (a composite of several maps from scenario workshops). To be useful, scenarios have to be realistic, so our scenarios will have some common points—they will need to have realistic mixes of housing, jobs, and investment. However, within these constraints there are many options we could pursue. The power of scenarios is that we can explore options and decide on the best strategies for the future.
Scenarios depend on modeling so that results are the most accurate possible. Upstate Together will use state of the art modeling in land use, economics, transportation, and the environment. These computer tools will allow us to look into the future so the consequences of today’s actions become obvious. Using this method provides an objective and scientific way of understanding the future, and often produces surprises and new understandings. Scenarios will help separate the myths from the facts about our future, and help develop consensus about the best strategies to use in the future.
