Dr. David Schecter
Dr. David Schecter is the provost and senior vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at USC Upstate. He comes to Upstate after nearly 20 years in the California State University system, most recently as vice provost at California State University – Bakersfield (CSUB).
At CSUB, Schecter worked closely with partners across campus, providing oversight for a number of corollary units within Academic Affairs, including the Office of Research and Grants and the Kegley Institute of Ethics. He worked extensively on budget analysis and resource planning for Academic Affairs, and assisted in the development and advancement of all strategic planning initiatives in the unit.
In his last five years at CSUB, Schecter also coordinated and led all tenure-track hiring efforts on campus, and assisted with faculty development and support, including faculty recognition and awards.
Prior to his position at CSUB, Schecter was department chair for political science at Fresno State and was the recipient of the Provost’s Award for Faculty Service, among other accolades.
A Florida native, Schecter holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Florida, a master’s degree in political science from Florida State University, and a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies and history from Florida State University. He also holds an MBA from Fresno State. He has previously taught at the University of Nevada — Las Vegas. In the mid-1990s, he served a four-year term as a city councilman in his hometown of Ormond Beach, Florida.
