Libera Università di Lingue e Comunicazione IULM was founded in 1968 as the University Institute of Modern Languages (IULM) and was primarily focused on meeting the language demands of the current labor market as the trends changed. In 1998 the university took on it's current name with the addition of degrees in communications and has since branched out to educate on tourism and cultural heritage.

Since that time is has become the fifth largest metropolitan area in the entire European Union with over 5 million residents. Today, over one-sixth of it's population are immigrants which are attracted to the area because of it's rich cultural history but also because it is a hub for fashion, business and industry.
