World Languages Institute
The World Languages Institute (WLI) of the Center for International Studies at USC Upstate establishes a pathway for residents of the Upstate region of South Carolina to explore various languages spoken throughout the world. WLI consists of a number of 5-week language courses, including, and not limited to Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), English, Farsi, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Ukrainian. These courses are offered for personal enrichment, not for academic credits. The Center for International Studies will issue a “Certificate of Recognition” to participants who successfully complete their chosen language course. WLI classes meet either twice per week for one hour of instruction, or weekly for a two-hour class during a five-week term. Two five-week terms are offered in the spring and fall semesters.
WLI courses are an investment for lifelong learners interested in international travel, improving their cross-cultural communication skills or enhancing their employability in an increasingly global marketplace. The Upstate continues to become an increasingly international and diverse community; learning another language is a meaningful step towards becoming an engaged "glocal" citizen.
