reflections: World language teachers' workshop 2018
The workshop will take place Monday, Feb. 19, 2018 from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. in the Campus Life Center Ballroom.
The year 2018 will mark the 20th anniversary of Reflections: World Language Teachers’ Workshop. Throughout these 20 years we have witnessed the transformation of instructional approaches and techniques that have been effective in helping students reach our targeted learning outcomes – language learner proficiency in all four skills at different levels of instruction, as well as a growing appreciation for intercultural skills.
Workshop titled: Ready? Set, Goal! Strategies for Developing Proficiency in the Classroom.
Workshop description: What does it mean to be “proficient”? What skills and knowledge are needed? How do I connect assessment with learning? What should I be working on with my language learners to help them move out of the Novice or Intermediate level? Focusing on what a student "can do," and how to motivate students to take risks without penalty, this workshop will include practical applications to help you guide students through the proficiency continuum. Explore what instruction and practice need to be emphasized in all modes of communication: Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational. Target audience includes educators of all languages teaching all levels of students from elementary through post-secondary settings.
Facilitator: The 2018 Reflections Workshop facilitator is a Cincinnati native, Dr. Karen Tharrington, who has lived in North Carolina since attending North Carolina State University as an undergraduate student. She received a Master's degree in Spanish Language and Literature at N.C. State and later, a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, where she conducted research on the value of Professional Learning Networks on Twitter for Pre-Service Teacher candidates. Karen is the Foreign Language Undergraduate Methods Instructor at North Carolina State University, and oversees the Foreign Language Education Program. She is past-president of FLANC, recipient of a DELTA grant (Distance Education and Learning Technology Applications, FLANC Teacher of the Year for Higher Education, and recipient of Bright Ideas K-12 Grant for International Project (K-12). Her research interests include Foreign Language teacher preparation, support, and retention. She regularly presents for ACTFL and other professional conferences.
