Upstate Theatre, formerly known as The Shoestring Players, is the theatrical production organization at University of South Carolina Upstate. Established in 1975 as a student-led group, the program began with ambitious goals and performances staged in a variety of nontraditional campus venues. Through dedication, creativity, and growing support from both the university and the local community, Upstate Theatre has evolved into a thriving part of campus life.
Today, Upstate Theatre is housed within the Department of Fine Arts and Communication Studies and has more than 30 years of theatrical production experience. The program includes three full-time faculty members, a technical director, a box office manager, and several adjunct instructors who support student learning and productions throughout the year.
Performance spaces include the 450-seat Proscenium Theatre, which hosts large-scale productions, as well as the Studio Theatre for smaller and more intimate performances. As the theatre program continues to expand and develop, Upstate Theatre remains committed to providing students and audiences with high-quality theatrical experiences while fostering creativity, collaboration, and artistic growth.
