While you may be worried about switching to all online for your classes, we want to let you know we are here for you. For many of your instructors, this may be their first time teaching online too! This can be a challenge for everyone. Therefore, it is important that we work together and be patient with one another. This page has answers to common questions. If you don’t find your answer here, or if something is making it difficult to Keep on Learning, let us know using this Keep on Learning form.
This page is meant to act as a simple index of useful services and technologies that will be important to students in the event that remote learning is required. Each link provides information about the service or program and information on getting started.
- Check your email and login to Blackboard frequently.
- Read directions and assignments carefully.
- Look for an updated syllabus.
- Check the folders for new content. Remember each class may be set up differently- just like each class is different.
- Let your professor know about problems with the technology (and then give them a chance to respond).
- Manage your time- Designate time for classes and separate time for homework, just as you did for F2F classes. For class time, login to Blackboard just like you would attend a class session. Do this several times a week and use this time to read assignments, review PowerPoints, watch videos, and listen to lectures. Use the homework time to answer discussion board questions, write essays, work practice problems, etc. View the Blackboard Calendar tutorial.
- Create a to-do list for each class with a due date for each item- this will keep you from forgetting an important assignment.
- Read class materials, textbooks, and supplemental materials with a purpose. Try the SQR3 reading method to deepen your understanding of course concepts. Survey the chapter or section, create questions as you read and turn section headers into questions, read for understanding, record notes as you read, and review what you read.
- Use active learning strategies to learn the materials. For example, test yourself, do practice quizzes, use flashcards.
Most importantly, use your resources. The school is not closed! We are here to help and want you to succeed. Don’t give up or withdraw from a class without reaching out for help first.

Log into Starfish. Click the three white lines in the top left corner. Click on My Success Network for a listing of your assigned academic advisor, your current semester faculty/instructors, and links to important student services and web sites. Make an appointment with a person in your Success Network by clicking the down arrow to the right of their name.

CSCI Tutoring Lab
The CS tutors have a Discord server that they’ve already been using some this semester. The link is https://discord.gg/pk7bZzd. Students will need a Discord account, and can contact one of the CS tutors, Austin Lee Hughes, Andrew Jillin Bohlman, or John Paul Kiser about being able to post questions.
Contact Director Brock Adams to make an appointment. In that email give him a general idea of when you are available to meet with a tutor. He will be in touch to arrange a meeting via Skype, Facetime, Discord, phone, etc. You will email a copy of your paper and the assignment/rubric to the tutor so you can discuss.
Tutoring for Other Topics
The Student Success Center continues to offer tutoring and Supplemental Instruction services online.
Here are some tips for scheduling your tutoring appointment:
- If this is your first time scheduling a tutoring appointment, email Jana Gordon.
- Returning users may use TutorTrac to schedule appointments.
- Need help with a business class? Schedule your online tutoring appointment through Linc online or by downloading the Linc Learning Inc. app.
- After you have scheduled an appointment, your tutor or Jana Gordon will contact you by email with instructions. Students who have previously scheduled an appointment will also receive an email. Make sure to check your Upstate email for appointment information and updates.
Drop-in online tutoring for BIOL 101, 243, and 244; CHEM 109 and 111; and MATH 102 and 121 is also available without an appointment. Please refer to the attached document for the drop-in tutoring schedule and access links to each session.

Blackboard is an online course delivery system where your instructors may post announcements, course syllabi, assignments or other information. Essentially, it is a mobile classroom that is accessible any where you have an Internet connection. Additional help with Blackboard can be found on the Upstate Online Student Resources page.
You can access email in Microsoft Office 365 by using Microsoft Outlook Web App, a web-based version of Microsoft Outlook. Outlook Web App gives you access to your Microsoft Exchange mailbox from any computer connected to the web.

Spartan Greensky is an initiative of USC Upstate to provide anywhere, anytime access to USC Upstate email, files and course-required software for all students, faculty, and staff. With Spartan GreenSky users can access any of these services via any computer or wireless device with Internet access, including access to nearly all computer labs and specialized software previously only available in specific computer labs.

- The library’s 24/7 computer lab is still open. If you’re in town and can get to campus you can work here as long as you maintain social distancing guidelines.
- All of the public schools have configured their WiFi so that you can sit in your car in the parking lot and use their wifi. They’ve removed any password restrictions.
- Some WiFi carriers are offering deals. Below in green is a list of wifi resources our IT department has compiled. If you contact one of these companies, be sure to read the fine print carefully. Some levels of service are free, but they will charge you if you order something faster. Others are free for two months and then you’ll have to pay if you don’t cancel. Please make sure that you can cancel at anytime before you sign anything. You might be able to locate a hotspot near your house. Look for maps like these:
List of Internet Service Providers
Here is a collection of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in SC. The list may not be complete, but it is our best effort in providing a list of providers.
Important Information About the List of ISPs:
- The student is responsible for contacting the Internet service provider.
- These offers are in no way affiliated with USC Upstate Division of IT.
- Caution should be used when signing up for any of these services to assure the service can be cancelled at the end of the quarantine term.

- AT&T: two months of free service to new access customers who order by April 30, 2020. It will then be five dollars a month or 10 dollars a month after the free two months, depending on speed. The company said it will expand eligibility for households participating in National School Lunch Program/Head start
