LGBTQ Safe Zone

About Safe Zone

The Safe Zone Program is a campus-wide initiative that educates on LGBTQ+ identities, gender, sexuality, power and privilege. The intent is also to educate on allyship and true civility for the purpose of building a more inclusive community. The Safe Zone training sessions are about two hours in length and afford attendees a foundational knowledge from which to build on. Completion is required for only one of the two-hour training sessions in order to receive certification. Interested students can sign up here for Safe Zone. Faculty/Staff Interested can register here for Safe Zone Certification.

Safe Zone Certification

The certification for Safe Zone is valid for three years after the completion of the workshop. Individuals who finish the training sessions will have the option of obtaining and displaying a Safe Zone decal or button in their residence hall, office space or other location to highlight their Safe Zone certification status. By deciding to display the Safe Zone decal, participants are showcasing their willingness and ability to be a supportive resource. Persons who complete the training will also have the choice to be included in an online safe zone network PDF Document Download.

Other Opportunities for Learning and Engagement

The Safe Zone initiative also has additional learning opportunities for USC Upstate students. Following the first training session, the Safe Zone Program will provide multiple opportunities for allies to better support the LGBTQ student population through identity development, networking, and educational workshops.

Gender Diversity Workshop
The Gender Diversity Workshop is designed to further examine the identity of gender. This two-hour long workshop narrowly focuses on transgender identities, experiences and allyship. All interested participants MUST complete the Safe Zone Ally training prior to attending the Gender Diversity Workshop.
