The Office of Disability Services provides assistive technology (upon approval) which provides equal access to all students. If you have an assistive technology need, please contact our office to set up an appointment. Our inventory includes:
A smart pen allows the student to record the lecture, while taking notes. These notes are then transferred to a computer.
Screen Reader Access
A screen reader speaks the content on the screen, allowing the student access to electronic information. The university currently supports: NVDA, Voiceover, Narrator, and Talkback screen readers.
The FM System amplifies the voice of the speaker. This allows the student to hear the speaker directly, and clearly.
The sonocent suite of products are designed to allow the student to record the class while taking notes. This software allows the student to highlight specific portions of the recording for later review.
Accessible Electronic Textbooks
Access to copies of electronic textbooks to students who meet eligibility requirements can be provided on an individual basis.
The interpretype provides printed access to spoken communications
Large Print and Talking Calculators
These calculators provide access to students with visual impairments.
Amplified Digital Stethoscopes
These stethoscopes amplify sounds so that they can be heard clearly.
ASL Interpreter Request form
If you require an ASL interpreter for an event, class, or other university related gathering, please complete and return the Interpreter Request form to Disability Services at least 5 days before the day of event.
The Accommodation Process
To request accommodations, students should register with Disability Services. Once you have filled out the application and uploaded your documentation, please call our office to set up an appointment. During the collaborative meeting, information will be shared about the nature of the disability and barriers to equal access. Some accommodations require significant lead time, such as scheduling sign language interpreters, and alternative textbook formats, so students should begin the request process well in advance of the start of their first academic semester.
Documentation may include information from a medical professional, the results of psychoeducational testing, the results of a response-to-intervention plan, documentation from the VA, a completed verification form from our office or another form of information about the disability from a health care provider. Since each student and each disability is uniquely different, we cannot know what will be needed in order to determine reasonable accommodations in advance of the initial meeting. Students are welcome to bring any documentation they have to the initial meeting. In most cases, an IEP or 504 are good for background information, but they do not document a disability.

Students should be prepared to discuss the impact of their disability in the academic environment, their history of accommodations and the accommodations being requested. This information, with the results of the documentation review, will help determine reasonable accommodations for the student.
When decisions are made regarding accommodations, Faculty Notification Letters are given to the student. The student must take the Faculty Notification Letter to their individual professors and be prepared to discuss the impact of their disability and how the requested accommodations will support them in the classroom. Accommodations will not be put in place until students have completed the collaborative interview.
