Services for Students
Counseling Services is here for students, providing support and information in the event of a psychological crisis. Counseling Services Services include free and confidential counseling services to currently enrolled students. Counseling Services staff comply with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and state guidelines.
Distance Counseling is available to all currently enrolled USC Upstate students and students who are enrolled in the USC Upstate Palmetto College Distance Counseling is a counseling session with a trained and certified counselor that is conducted over a private and secure web-based method. To utilize this service, you will need access to a device with a webcam and a microphone. How to Schedule an Appointment
To make an initial appointment with Counseling Services, please call us at 864-503-5195, or come by Sansbury Campus Life Center (CLC) Suite 224 between 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Prepare to share your contact information including your name, student ID number, date of birth, and phone number.
Please note that the terms Therapist/Counselor/Clinician may be used interchangeably.
Counseling Services at the University of South Carolina Upstate provides free and confidential comprehensive counseling services to currently enrolled students. These services include the following:
- Individual and Couples Counseling
To help students deal with an array of personal and interpersonal issues including stress, anxiety, depression, grief and relationship issues.
- Group Counseling
A group environment where students may gain support and understanding from peers.
- Crisis Intervention
To offer students with urgent emotional distress immediate assistance.
- Psychiatric Services
To support students who may benefit from medication management.
In addition, Counseling Services provides educational workshops on a wide range of topics including but not limited to the following:
- Stress Management
- Test Anxiety
- Time Management
- Suicide Prevention
- Healthy Relationships
- Grief and Loss
Counseling Services is recognized as an established site for those students needing to take the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). This test is offered several times throughout the year.
You can contact Counseling Services between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. at.864- 503-5195. Our offices are located on the second floor of the Sansbury Campus Life Center (CLC), Suite 224.
*Please note that individuals who do not show for their scheduled counseling, psychiatry or testing appointment will be charged a $25 fee. This fee must be paid prior to scheduling your next appointment. Fees may be paid online.
- Individual and Couples Counseling
To register for the MAT, please contact Counseling Services at 864-503-5195. Please register for the test PRIOR to making a payment.
The fee is and must be paid by 5PM on the day prior to the test. You may pay online via credit card.
All PAYMENTS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE BUT MAY BE TRANSFERRED TO A DIFFERENT MAT DATE AT USC UPSTATE.
No checks or cash will be accepted at the door at the time of the test. If you are unable to pay via credit card, please contact our office to make payment arrangements.
Please bring 2 forms of ID:
- A government-issued identification card or passport or driver’s licensed AND
- A credit card (with or without a photograph), utility bill with your name and address appearing exactly the same as on the primary form of ID, or a student ID
You will also need to provide your Social Security number.
Expect to be here for at least 2 Hours
The test consists of 120 items, which you will be given 60 minutes to complete.
It takes 7-10 business days for official scores to be sent to your College of choice however, a copy of your score results are available immediately after the test.
Registration will begin at 4:00 p.m. and is held in the Media Building at the USC Upstate Campus in Room 218. Please arrive no later than 4:30 pm.

SOME PROHIBITED ITEMS INCLUDE:
- ANY WRITING INSTRUMENTS OTHER THAN PENCILS TO USE WITH THE PROVIDED SCRATCH PAPER
- ANY FOOD AND BEVERAGES
- A HAT WITH A BILL OR BRIM
- PURSES, BACKPACKS, BRIEFCASES, ETC.
- CELL PHONES
