Service Student Learning Outcomes (SLO)

In order to promote best high-impact practices and create rigorous, career-relevant, accessible, and transformative service opportunities, USC Upstate has adopted the eight requisite career competencies identified by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and, for each, has extrapolated two key Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) that reflect skills and insights USC Upstate students should hone through courses designated "Service."

  1. Communication
    1. Students articulate clearly and effectively in written and oral modes, identifying and addressing bias in spoken, written, and non-verbal communication
    2. Students articulate altruistic and social justice motivations for community participation
  1. Teamwork and Collaboration
    1. Students identify the value and challenge found in bringing together diverse people and perspectives (peers, instructors, community members, and the community at-large)
    2. Students apply interdisciplinary concepts and a diversity of ideas to community issues (concerns, needs, strengths, and resources)
  1. Leadership
    1. Students devise and implement strategies for collaboration and conflict resolution which recognize bias in themselves and others as well as the value in disparate views
    2. Students cultivate an inclusive attitude that advances equity, wellness, and civility
  1. Creativity and Problem Solving
    1. Students analyze information data and concepts, and apply information to real-world problem solving
    2. Students accept challenges and assume new roles and/or identify approaches to real-world issues
  1. Professionalism and Productivity
    1. Students exhibit competence and confidence in setting reasonable goals and making a difference
    2. Students persevere in the face of challenges
  1. Application of Information Technology
    1. Students employ trans-modal articulation of information (written, verbal, art, media, etc.)
    2. Students apply Information Technology tools to problem-solving in their service experience
  1. Glocal (Global + Local) Perspectives 
    1. Students articulate similarities and differences between local and global cultural traditions as they affect community and social issues
    2. Students analyze the interdependence and mutual benefits of partnerships between community and self
  1. Career Management
    1. Students formulate or clarify personal values, attitudes, ethics and beliefs
    2. Students analyze and articulate their own place in the greater community
    • For the Service-Learning designation, a course should include overt attention (e.g. instruction, guided reflection) to 4 of the 8 domains.To qualify for the Service-Engagement designation, a course should include overt attention to 2 of the 8 domains. Instructors choose to address one of two SLOs under each domain. See the Service Course Desgnation Application Overview 
    • To enable assessment of these Student Learning Outcomes, we ask that instructors of Service designated courses include one common reflective assignment. A sample template for this assignment is provided here at the SLO Sample Common Assessment.
    • Each year, 15% of all Service designated courses will be randomly selected for assessment. It is highly recommended, therefore, that instructors embed this common assignment in Blackboard for easy collection and sharing of student responses. Students' learning will be assessed according a rubric accessible here.
