Founded as the Tianjin Industrial and Commercial University in 1921 by French Jesuits, Hebei University has gone through numerous name and location changes until 1970 when it finally settled in its permanent home in Baoding. The university plays a major role in this area not only because it is a center for higher learning but also because it is home to the largest library in the province, a museum which hosts over 8,000 items and one of the top provincial hospitals. Over 44,000 students are currently enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs.
The city of Baoding, China is located near the border of the capital city of Beijing which explains why the name roughly translates to "protecting the capital." It is one of thirteen Chinese cities with a population of over 10 million people and is seventh in size overall. Perhaps its most well known products are the "Baoding balls," otherwise known as Chinese medicine balls, which are two metal balls that are meant to be rotated in the hand to improve dexterity and strength.
