Alcohol & Nutrition

When we drink, it’s easy to forget how many calories, in addition to alcohol, we are consuming with each drink. Many people don’t realize that one night of drinking can equal a meal or even an entire day’s worth of calories!

Food for thought...

  • A 12 ounce beer has about 150 calories and 13 grams of carbohydrates.
  • A 12 ounce light beer has about 100 calories and 5 grams of carbohydrates.
  • A six (6) ounce glass of white wine has about 120 calories and 1.4 grams of carbohydrates.
  • A six (6) ounce glass of red wine has about 128 calories and three (3) grams of carbohydrates.
  • A one ounce shot of 80 proof liquor such as vodka, rum, tequila, or gin has about 100 calories.
  • A one ounce shot of 100 proof liquor has about 124 calories.
  • If having a mixed drink, you must include the total number of calories for the entire drink.  For example, one (1) ounce of rum plus four (4) ounces of coca-cola total about 180 calories and 12 grams of carbohydrates.
  • Four (4) cups of light microwave popcorn has about 120 calories.
  • Three (3) medium whole-wheat pancakes have a total of about 180 calories.
  • Three and a half (3.5) ounces of lean beef, plus one (1) baked potato with low fat sour cream, plus a salad with light dressing totals about 470 calories!

The process of metabolizing alcohol requires nutrients. As the liver decreases its supply of these nutrients, the blood stream must work hard to replenish them. As a result, body cells, including brain cells, are deprived of critical nutrients and normal body functions suffer.
