Alvin Burrell, regional senior manager for asset protection, recently assumed asset protection responsibilities for Wal-Mart Logistics Region 12. The region includes Food and General Merchandise Distribution Centers in North Carolina, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Alvin resides with his wife Martha in Bella Vista, Arkansas.



Steven "Skip" Frye is a teacher and coach at Broome High School. He has been State Track Coach of the Year for 1989, 2002, 2005 and 2006. He was also the Cross-Country State Coach of the Year for 2005.

Carol N. Powell is Spartanburg County School District 2 Teacher of the Year. She has been teaching for 24 years, 23 of which have been at Chesnee High School where she is a ninth-grade world geography teacher and a service learning and internship advisor.



Steve Harvey, president of Roebuck Advertising, has recently spoken to the following business and civic groups: Westside Rotary, Spartanburg Real Estate Investors, Spartanburg Women in Media, South Carolina Hospital Managers Association and International Association of Administrative Professionals. His speech, entitled “Tacos and Sweet Tea,” looks at the problems and opportunities facing the Upstate due to raid growth in the Hispanic population.

Doug Lightbody was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame February 10, 2007. Lightbody is the ninth person from the men's basketball program and fifth member of the 1982 NAIA National Championship team to enter the Hall.

Colleen (Melissa) Dixon was promoted to the rank of Commander in the Naval Reserve in July 2006. She served as an Intelligence Officer since 1990. She is currently assigned to Reserve Intelligence Area Norfolk, VA. She has also established her own freelance writing business, Shenandoah Writing Services. Her clients include local and national businesses require research, editing, or writing services. Her most interesting assignment was through the Naval Reserve, when she worked for two weeks at Naval Criminal Investigative Service Headquarters editing two classified annual reports on Counter-Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism.

Sherman Eller married his high school sweetheart on February 24, 2006. His son, Kyle, was awarded the prestigious Chancellor’s Scholarship Award to attend USC Upstate which covers full tuition and fees for 4 years. Sherman also recently received the 2005 Nike Account Executive of the Year in the Equipment Division. This is his 17 th year with Nike Incorporated.



John LaPenta is currently working as an attorney in Charlotte, North Carolina where he lives with his wife and two sons.



David Morrison obtained his MBA in 1993 from Eastern University in Philadelphia. He married Mitzi Rae Roberts on June 4, 1994. They have two children, Amanda and Matthew. He moved to Cincinnati in 1997.

Wayne Hyatt earned a Doctor of Ministry degree in August 2005 from Gardner-Webb University. Wayne is currently Associate Pastor of Adults at Morningside Baptist Church and a Licensed Marital and Family Therapist in Spartanburg, South Carolina.. He also serves as Chaplain for the Spartanburg Public Safety Department.

Lorraine Moore, third-grade math teacher at Cowpens Elementary, is Spartanburg County School District 3 Teacher of the Year.

Kiley Gilmore and his high school sweetheart, Anna, were married in 1995 after dating for more than 7 years. In 2000, they adopted two wonderful children from Russia, Kyle and Sarah. Gilmore is employed with Milliken & Co. in Spartanburg as manager of financial reporting.

Rob McDonald was named Cowpens Middle School assistant principal for 2005-2006.

Chris Parham was recognized as Mountain Air’s “Employee of the Year” for 2005.

Thomas Webster, science coach at Lone Oak Elementary, is Spartanburg County School District 6 Teacher of the Year. He and his wife Bonnie have three children.



Penny L. Darrah married Carl F. Bowers on August 24, 2003. They welcomed their daughter Katelyn Elizabeth Bowers into the world on May 29, 2004, and twins were born on August 11, 2006 at 28 weeks. Ellie Rose was 1 lb 4 oz and 12 ½ inches. Ethan Carl was 1 lb. 15 oz. and 14 ½ inches. They have another daughter, Katelyn, born in May of 2004.

Julie Davis received a Bachelor of Science in Technical Communication in 2001 from Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY as well as a Master of Science in Information Technology in 2004. She is ly employed as Clarkson University’s web/graphic designer, where she also teaches classes as an adjunct instructor. Julie married Wade Davis on August 8, 1994. They have two kids, Katelyn Jade Davis, born January 5, 2004 and Thomas Edward Davis, born June 1, 2005.

Donnita Harris gave birth to Rashad Riley on July 30, 1995.

Chris Hills received his MBA in International Business and is currently creating the Global LexisNexis IT strategy. His son, Jacob, was born in 2005.

Audrey Lewis married Leroy Marshall, II December 30, 1995. Their daughter, Victoria Elayne Marshall, was born September 2001.

Yakov Nisenbaum married Inna Shoffer July 3, 2004. Tthey have one child, Reena Nisenbaum, born November 2005.

Jennifer Lassiter, sixth-grade language arts teacher at Woodruff Middle School, is District 4 Teacher of the Year. She has been married for 17 years and has two sons, Zachary and Jacob.

David Rimel operates Safety Consultants, Inc. in Spartanburg and is serving as the general contractor for a house currently under construction.

Tasha Thomas, freshman English teacher at Chapman High School, is Spartanburg County School District 1 Teacher of the Year . She also works at USC Upstate.



Timothy Drummond is the founder of Pindrum Staffing Services, Inc. in Greenville. He is the VIce Chair of Diverse Owned Businesses on The Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce board. Timothy is also a member of The Carolina Piedmont Foundation of USCUpstate and The Greenville Cultural Exchange Center boards. Timothy is the Chair for the Carolina High Academy Mentoring Program as well. He received his MBA from Webster University and his Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Carolina Upstate.

Dan Dupler is a salesman for Greenville Valve and Fitting. Dan and his wife Allison have two sons: 4-year-old Sam and 2-year-old Hudson.

Adrian Kostiuk and his wife, Vicki, purchased a new house in Spartanburg. They have a 2-year-old son, Jack, and a baby on the way. Adrian works for CH Robinson in Greenville, one of North America's largest third party logistics companies, with operations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, and Asia.

Michael Lopez is the general manager of Hawthorn Suites in Greenville, South Carolina.

Todd Seagle was named South Carolina’s Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year. He teaches at Boiling Springs Elementary.

Bobby Wilder is a a behavior interventionist with the Horry County School District. He worked at Loris Middle School in Loris, South Carolina for two years and will be starting at North Myrtle Beach Primary School this fall.

Monica Cothran joined United Way of the Piedmont board as campaign director. The position focuses on campaign plan and fundraising strategy development. Cothran has several years of fund development experience and an extensive knowledge of the non-profit community. Cothran received a Bachelor of Arts in communications from Upstate.

Dana Lynn Davis is the Director of Alumni and Parent Programs for Limestone College. She lives in Boiling Springs, South Carolina.

Alex Hollis is an English teacher, tennis coach and assistant wrestling coach at Chapman High School in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Alex and his wife Heather are expecting their first child in January 2007.

Chris Jefferies was promoted to Technical Support Analyst at Newark InOne in Gaffney, South Carolina.

Jason Clark finished his dissertation at UT-Knoxville and obtained his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry. He works at Oak Ridge National Lab in the Chemical Sciences Division. He also has had several publications in the past year (one in the Journal of Organometallic Chemistry and one in Catalysis Today.)

Kristin Korte Zurliene was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame February 10, 2007. Zurliene played for the volleyball team from 1998-2001 and is the sixth person affiliated with the volleyball program to be inducted into the USC Upstate Athletics Hall of Fame.

Melinda Inman went to work for the 16th Circuit Solicitor’s Office in Union County as Juvenile Arbitration Coordinator and Paralegal after graduating. She left there in July 2005 and has been in Law School at Regent University’s Virginia Beach Campus. She hopes to return to the upstate after receiving her Juris Doctor.

Simone Mack has been hired as business development representative at Spartanburg Regional Federal Credit Union.

Sheila Ragin was named Chairman of the English Department at Hillcrest Middle School. She also received her M.Ed. in Psychology and Counseling from Troy University in May 2006. She is currently pursuing a second M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction in Reading.

Allen Richard is finishing a summer internship with the legal department at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, S.C. This fall he will head back to Columbia for his third and final year of law school at the University of South Carolina.

Kelly Rush has joined Practical Business Systems in Greenville as its Internet marketing specialist. She is responsible for the company’s public relations and marketing department.

She was in the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. She made the National Dean’s List for 2003-2006. She was also the SNA Treasurer for 2005-2006 and student Ambassador for 2002-2006.
